Scrap Bag
I’ve been focused on creative reuse lately, and have been learning more about the massive amount of textile waste across industries. While a very small slice of the total textile waste stream, industry fabric samples usually end up in the trash and are easy to find. I needed an overnight bag, and made this from an upholstery sample pack, canvas fabric and findings from my local reuse store, and a leather strap I found on the ground. Sorry to the owner of the jacket now missing that strap, it is working great as bag handles :)
I don’t think I’d use upholstery fabric for smaller scale patchwork again, as it’s loosely woven and relatively thick. However I love the gradients that come together naturally with sample packs, as they usually include several coordinating color ways. You can usually get these at local showrooms, or sometimes your local fabric store. It’s always worth asking what an establishment is throwing away, due to stains, or an item simply not moving in the store. It’s a great supply source for those wanting to decrease waste and save some money.
